At the end of October 2017, Tianjin Pauway Power Equipment Co., Ltd commissioned an emergency power supply system consisting of ten 20-cylinder MTU Series 4000 engines for a new data centre operated by Internet Service Provider Sinnet in the eastern district of Beijing. This will now be the fourth time Sinnet has equipped one of its data centres with emergency diesel gensets from Pauway, powered by MTU engines.

The power outputs of the six-cylinder MTU Series 1100 and 1500 engines have been boosted by 20 kW across the board, meaning they now cover a power range of 240 to 480 kW and deliver up to 3,100 Nm of torque. Series 1000 to 1500 engines, which are based on Daimler commercial vehicle engines and have been upgraded for EU Stage V jointly by MTU and Daimler, will be available to ship as early as June 2018. Customers will continue to be able to source the EU Stage IV engines which will be available alongside the new models. Agriculture and forestry vehicles powered by MTU engines include, in particular, combine-harvesters, corn choppers, large tractors, beet harvesters, self-propelled crop sprayers, wood chippers and timber harvesters. Rolls-Royce has acquired from G+L innotec the exclusive rights of use for a new technology for the electrically-assisted charging of off-highway combustion engines in the power range above 450 kW. Rolls-Royce plans to offer engines of its MTU brand with this technology as of 2021. To provide the turbocharger with electrical assistance, a permanent magnet is installed upstream of the compressor wheel (1) and the electrical winding (2) is integrated into the casing of the compressor. The special feature of this arrangement is the large gap between the magnet and winding. This ensures that there is no aerodynamic impact on the charger and also that existing chargers can be adapted easily to enable them to make use of this technology.
